Something New in Orchard Road

Pavement renovations at Orchard Road started about two months ago and the whole stretch of Orchard is up for a new facelift.

Th renovations work would cost a staggering $40million.

The $40 million facelift, announced last October, will see new plants and flowers, as well as street furniture and lighting added to the thoroughfare which will be themed along the lines of fruit, flower and forest.

The Renovations hopefully will be completed in time for Christmas 2008 (or around April 2009).

These are random shots of Orchard Road taken this morning around 9:30 am

This Story is One for the Books

I have witnessed so many funny and hardwarming stories of maids who come and go in my agency but this particular incident was not just heartwarming but also funny.

Last Friday, one employer returned his maid of 4 months to the agency .The reason given was that this girl cannot get along well with the other maid who has been with the employer for over a year. So to keep peace in the household they decided to return the maid who I will call Amihan.

When Amihan walked into our office the minute her employer left her tears kept streaming down her beautiful face. She told us about her experience with the other maid saying that the other maid was teaching her how to lie and get money from the two small children of her employers.

As we watched her tell her story, four other maids who are our regular visitors(because they are still searching for employers ) walked in .One of them was Flora. Flora has been in Singapore for 8 years .She decided to transfer employer only last month because she said she was bored in her employers house because her ward was already grown up.She briefly found a French employer but when the employer shouted at her she decided to quit and on Friday she was in the office to follow up her interviews.

As Amihan was telling her story again for the benefit of those who came in. One girl asked her where she was from. She said that she was from Iloilo.

Flora who is an Ilongo said "I am from Iloilo too". Then she asked in the Ilongo dialect "which part of Iloilo are you from?" .Then Amihan gave the name of her town.
When Flora heard Amihans answer she stood up and sat beside Amihan.

Flora then asked Amihan, "what is your surname". Amihan answered ,"Paez"(not the real surname). Then Flora started jumping up and down.

We all asked her why are you jumping? She said that the surname was very rare in that town and if that is so then Amihan is her relative.

She asked Amihan again,"who is your father?" When Amihan gave the name of her father.Flora suddenly jumped and embraced Amihan."You are my Niece!!!!"

We were all surprised with the hugging and embracing that followed and we all laughed at the chance encounter. Fate had brought them together maybe not on very good times but at least they found each other.

Amihan then said that she was really looking for an Aunt that her father told her was working in Singapore and that aunt turned out to be Flora.

Its something that happens only in TV stories and drama but I was lucky enough to have watched it happen.

Now the two of them are catching up on stories back home. Of course they still have to find new employers and we sure will help them on that part.

My Spa Experiences

Niles,my youngest son brought home a booklet of discount vouchers from the NDP 2008 show and I was tempted to use most of the spa vouchers.

Since last week I have visited two spas already and had my massage at one and my facial at another. Tomorrow I have an appointment with another for my tummy treatment.

Last week I also decided to transfer my treatments from the Tiong Bahru branch to the Orchard Road(Wheelock Place) branch of London Weight Management. Last Tuesday was the 5th of my 10 wrapping sessions and I have not lost any inch around my tummy or any part of my body.

I just love the pampering, I dont really know whether people are really losing weight! Not with me anyway.

The Countdown for the New iPhone 3G is on

(This is Greg Packer. He is first in line for iPhone in New York City at Apple Store Fifth Avenue near Central Park. He showed up on Monday morning, June 25th, at 5am. He must be that "Apple iPhone Crazy"!)

Friday 8:00 am is the launching day of the new 3G Apple iPhone in 71 countries and as early as today queues are being formed in Tokyo,New York and Australia in the Apple Stores.

However as of presstime, it will only be available on July 11 at these Luck 22 Countries. If you want to get hold of the new iPhone go to any of these countries on Friday,HK is the nearest

When i bought my iPhone last May in Las Vegas as ealry as one hour before the Fashion Show Mall Apple Store opened 4 of us were already queueing up and just imagine I came all the way from San Diego and los Angeles to buy the phone which was already out of stock(maybe because of the imminent coming of the new version).

When the two guys infront of me got their hands on the iPhone they each got two boxes and were clapping their hands (in glee). Lucky for me to get the last 2 boxes of 16gigabyte model. The 4th guy next to me was so pissed off for not coming in early.

Just today my American client came in enquiring about a maid, he asked me" Is that an iPhone(pointing to my phone)?" I said "Yes" and he said "Cool" .

(Photos in Tokyo)

Buti pa iPhone ko napapansin.

Although it is very much touted that the new phone will see at US$199 but this comes with a two year contract which would cost more.

AT&T also announced that the iPhone 3G would be available without a contract, but at a cost of $400 more – thus costing $599 for the 8-gigabyte model and $699 for the 16-gigabyte model.

Thank heavens I have my iPhone

ADOBE MASTERS TOUR 2008

"Be inspired by the three Worldwide Software Masters from Adobe and learn their techniques in their relevant disciplines. All sessions include creative material that has never been shown before in your region.

Together, the three masters will show you how they work as a team, to prepare content to be published for print, the web, and video "

I went for a leave from work today for the Adobe Masters Tour Seminar. It is nice to attend some computer sessions like this. Most of the participants came from publishing, graphics and web design companies and although Greg Rewis's Apple conked out on him during his presentation I actually did learn some tricks or two.

When I was still working for my first employer here in Singapore Tien Wah Press(Dai Nippon Group) I had already dabbled in Adobe since everytime the Graphic Designers are busy I did my own layout of the newsletter that I was editing. Tien Wah being one of the best printers in Asia has always been updated in printing technologies since most of their clients need assistance in graphic layout and editing.

I sure did learn a lot from that stint and looking at the presentation(except the video editing which was presented by Jason Levine) most of the presentation was familiar to me except that this time using CS3(the latest Adobe application) web and graphic design presentation becomes faster.

The trio composed of Italian Graphics Designer Rufus Deuchler,Recording Engineer Jason Levine and world renowned Web Expert and Dream Weaver CS3 Author Greg Rewis showed their expertise and tricks of the trade.

The lucky draw prize was a full package of the new Adobe CS3 worth about US$3000 won by Media Corp, the biggest television station in Singapore(luto ata yan ah)

See the latest on Adobe here.

Lessons I Learned From Using the Apple IPhone

Now that the new iPhone 3G is coming (July 11) I would like to share the lessons I learned from using the old Apple iPhone. I first used the 8Gb model in february and I purchased the new iPhone 16gb in April in Las Vegas(because they were not selling them anymore in LA and San Diego)so I think I can share my experience with the iPhone although I am not an expert in it yet:

1) Using the Apple iPhone is quite easy not unlike if you are a Nokia user(which I was for several years) and shifting to a Motorola(which I did at one time) or to a SOny Ericson (which I did for 2 years) which takes time to adapt to.

The keyboard of Apple is similar to what you are using in your laptop or computer except that the keyboards are smaller. Even my two kids got the hang of it(using ) the iPhone within a few hours .

2) The keyboards of the Apple iPhone are quite small and it has a logic that it automatically types in the words as you use them frequently which is the reason why my iPhone and I are now buddy buddy .It can spell my tagalog words faster than me.

3) It still doesnt have a video but you can download a video service which my two sons did and I dont know where they got it. Mind you my sons are 10 and 11 yrs old so that means the phone is quite easy to maneuver not unlike the Nokia Slide model which until now my husband hasnt mastered.

4) the screen of the iPhone is the best that I have ever had in all my phones(Nokia,Sony Erickson Motorola and LG). It is clear and quite big.

5) The camera although resolution is not as fancy as other models like the LG Viewty(which I have) and the Sony Ericson latest 5mb model produces good results which I am using in my blogs.

6) Emailing using my iphone is easy specially if you have a wireless connection at home or in the office.

7) Surfing using the Safari surfer is also fast except that the screen is quite small vis a vis your laptop.

8) It has the best capacity for the iTunes and Youtube. My sons use it to listen to music.

9) It still is a novelty if you are one of the first users in Asia but later on it might not be anymore.

10) In the US, Apple iPhone users are lesser because the monthly charges for iPhone compared to Blackberry line is higher.

I guess we have to wait whether there will be a long queue at the Apple stores by Friday. Good luck Apple fanatics!

The New iPhone 3G is Coming in July

WHats good with having the iPhone now in Singapore is that you get stares when you use it in the MRT. Most passengers cant believe its actually working here in Singapore.Hubby and I had been using our iPhones for over 4 months now and we are satisfied customers.

Now comes the unhackable 3G iPhone which retails in 70 countries(not yet SIngapore) by July 11.

Here is the spoof, enjoy....

Money Saving and Earning Tips

Todays Straits Times carried a Special Report on 30 ways to tighten your Belt. I found the report very interesting and here is my own take on my own way of (not belt tightening) but Saving and Making more Money (these are my TOP 10 Tips)

1) Try to list down all your daily expenses and monitor them on a daily/monthly basis. This will help you know where to cut back or to reduce expense.

Some people think this is quite tedious to write down all your expenses but it will serve you well in knowing how much you spend on essential items and non essential items.

I had been maintaining a budget/ expenses list since 1996. My expense list was even "madugo"(very meticulous ) when I started out since I even list down how much I spent on Fish, meat, veggie even down to my sons diapers and milk .

When we moved to Singapore in 2000 I started another expense category which summarizes my food, utilities(electric, gas), phone, internet, school, maid, entertainment and other expenses.

It is quite interesting to see that I noticed that the more I earn the more I spend even if I try to cutback on certain items it always follows that when you earn more you also spend more.

2) Recycle everything- In the office(since I am running my own business) I try to recycle my paper for the fax and copier machines. I try to use both the front and back pages of paper for my clients documents. I also use ink refills for my printer since it comes out much cheaper.

In the house, we used to sell my sons clothes and toys at flea market in our neighborhood during flea market sales until we ran out of things to sell. Whatever excess or unused things at home we either donate it to charity or bring them back to the Philippines when we go back every year. My sons shirts are hardly used since normally they use it only once and dont want to use them anymore. Thats why now a days I dont buy clothes for them anymore...they just wear the same 3-4 pieces of pants and t shirts (their favorite outfits). These saves on money and closet space.

We even recycle left over food(if ever we have). Like if there is left over fish we use them as fillers for lumpia, if meat we grind them and use for the spaghetti sauce. If ever we have extra veggies at home we cut them up and make chop suey or put them in our sinigang. We also buy only foods we are familiar with and which we know our kids love to eat.

3) Make your credit card and cell/handphones work for you (Earn Money for You)... This is only for those doing business.

Most money experts will ask you not to use your credit cards if you want to save money but on the contrary if you are doing business you cant go without a credit card since most transactions are now online.

As a result of my holding more than 20(at last count) credit cards I can transact business for my clients for which I earn extra income from airline ticket bookings, visa extension online transactions, e learning transactions and the like.

I dont pay a single cent for annual fees from my cards since if they charge me I just close the account(since I still have 19 other cards).

Easily I earn a few hundreds to thousand dollars by using my credit cards.

I also get free facials, massages, free movie tickets or cheaper (2 tickets for $6) deals with my credit cards.

My phone also works for me since it is where my clients call me .It is my mini office. I mostly transact business by phone or internet.

If you are using your phone for personal calls use the landline and not the handphone since you pay a fixed monthly fee for the landline compared to the cell phone.

3) If you dont want to spend money dont go out-
Stay at home...watch TV or watch free movies online :
http://freehitmovies.org
http://movie6.net
http://moviefather.com

Also eat out less often. If you really want to save, bring your own food , water or coffee to work since bottled water and coffee can also cost a few dollars more per day.

If you want to go out, go to the park to cycle, library or just window shop(dont bring your wallet so you wont be tempted to buy).

4) If you really need to buy something canvass all shops first online or check internet sites for cheap bargains or join online travel/budget communities.

If you want to buy things for your home, you can go to ebay or check out the bulletin boards of your local supermarkets for things being sold in your neighborhood.

Some of my maids(I am running a maid agency) even tell us when their employers are going back and they help sell or give away the stuff that their employers are leaving behind.

One thing we dont cut back is on our travelling and I usually buy our air tickets early to save on planetickets for our yearly trips to the Philippines or we make use of my husbands Airmiles for free flights.

Most budget airlines have zero or buy 1 take 1 flights but not in December which is considered peak period. Two years ago I was able to buy a cheaper ticket by flying in from Singapore to Cebu and we even had a brief vacation in Cebu before going to Manila.

When buying tickets choose weekday and non peak period flights and go online right away once a special sale is announced.

Some websites would go to extreme by recommending you to hitch a ride with cargo planes like Fedex or UPS who do take in some travellers(wthout baggages) but I wont go to that extreme.

If you really really want to save on hotels when you travel you can join online couching networks like http://www.couchsurfing.com. that can provide you free accomodations even in expensive cities like Paris and London. But you have to give back the favor by hosting other travellers also. This is on the principle of "giving back the favor".

5) Live like you have no money.
I dont know whether this mind set is negative but in these days when the prices of everything is going up the mentality should be to think first before you buy or to think that you dont have money so that you wont be tempted to buy. This doesnt mean that you have to hold back on essentials like health(seeing the doctor or buying medicines or getting hospitalized), food(making sure you have at least 3 meals a day) and housing(that you are not behind in your mortgage or taxes).

6)Make sure you put money in the bank for future expenses
My husband and I maintain two FX fixed deposits in Aussie and New Zealand $ which earns us 6-8% yield the highest so far among all currencies. We call these money our nest egg and we shall only touch it when our kids are grown up and we are already retired from work.

Another investment we have is our CPF(government levy) which earns us 4.5% annually. But we can only get the lump sum if we leave Singapore permanently. Our house in Singapore is also an investment since we dont really plan to stay here permanently.

7)Learn to Give without Asking in Return
Even if money is hard to earn and costs are going up it doesnt mean that you cannot give help to others in need. You can still give (give until your pocket hurts) specially to others who need your help. There is a saying that " It is better to give than to receive". You would feel better if you have helped others.

But mind you dont be a sucker for helping people who dont want to help themselves. When you help people I believe it brings you good luck if not for you then for people around you.

You also feel a certain warmth and wellbeing that no amount of spa ,massage or facial can bring you.

8) Think Positively and Become Healthy- The secret to saving money is to have GOOD HEALTH. Its useless to have money if you are always sick... so part of this is to think positively, create more friends and dont make enemies, smile more often, dont worry about the future because the future will take care of itself. I have never encountered a moment when I totally was desperate for money I always think positively that somehow it will turn out well and it did turn out well. Just work hard and pray more.

9) Live a Simple but Enriching Life
- Donot buy non essential things, dont buy brand name goods if you cannot afford them(like charging them to your credit card).Donot travel if you cant afford to pay for vacations. Learn to enjoy quiet moments with your family.

I have been totally blissful just having short walks with my two boys in the small park near home , the same feeling I have when I go for trips with them overseas which means that I dont really have to spend much money to be happy.

and lastly

10) Teach your children the same money and personal values you have
. They say that your children are your biggest expense accounts. They somethings think of you as their personal credit cards and ATMs. Therefore teaching them how to be frugal and how to spend and invest money wisely will save you more money than you can dream off.

My two boys only receive $1(P30) baon or school allowance since they were in Primary 1. Of course you cannot expect them to save money on that amount but they have learned to cope with only having that for their school allowance. They can only buy toys (when they were younger) during birthdays or christmas(after they receive money gifts). We never buy anything extra for them. Whatever food we prepare they have to eat (they are both super healthy) so we never have problems about their health or them getting sick.

Sometimes your children will be influenced by their classmates ,friends or by TV or computer/online shops but you as parents can rein them in by showing them how you live within your means.

I Hope by December , NAIA 3 will be Open

This is my wish! I heard Gloria is going to use it upon her return from the US this week?

I am very excited to look at one particular area: toilets. I hope the toilets work and have water and tissue paper and other amenities. Then at least di tayo napapagiwanan.

From the web photos, the design is much similar to the truss and beams of Bangkok's Subvarnabumi airport. Some shots specially of the escalator reminded me of the Krabi airport.

I hope it will be much much better than these photos.

Tita Glo,kelan ba talaga ang opening?

A Touching Commercial About A Parents Love

This is one good commercial. Everytime I see it I get teary eyed. I feel a lump in my throat and I dont know why.

I always say (to the point of repeating myself) to my two sons how lucky they are for having parents like us.
